Who We Are
We, the Periclean Scholars Class of 2017, aspire to develop the growth of knowledge and service around the world, specifically in the African nation of Namibia. We partner with, instead of creating for, and aim to generate sustainable change in communities, both at home and abroad. Our cohort at Elon University participates in global conversations and assumes civic responsibility because of our passion and drive to inspire continued international engagement. Our group is composed of 23 students with a variety of academic majors and skill sets who are dedicated to building upon the work of previous Periclean Scholars to provide lasting change. We hope to establish a presence around the world and forge a path for the future.
Our Partners
University of Namibia
We have an official signed partnership with the University of Namibia and will be co-hosting a conference with their students and faculty this coming January. The conference, titled Voices of Sustainability, will take place at the UNAM School of Medicine in the capital city of Windhoek from January 23-25, 2017.
Our Collaborators
Ecology Action
We have collaborated with Ecology Action, a 501(c)(3) based out of Willits, California. Ecology Action "teaches people worldwide to better feed themselves while building and preserving the soil and conserving resources." Since 1972, Ecology Action has been implementing and educating others about Grow BioIntensive, a method of sustainable agriculture that emphasizes local food production. The organization has helped to implement projects in Mexico, Kenya, Argentina, and more.
Loy Farm
We have worked locally with Loy Farm, located on Elon University's Campus. It was established in 2000 and has a variety of opportunities for student engagement. The farm is used by a variety of students as well as professors. Humanities, social science and natural science courses all utilize the farm as an instructional tool, and it hosts the research projects of both students and professors. In addition, the farm gives back to Elon University and the larger Burlington community as a variety of organizations use the food grown there. Our Class has spent time at Loy Farm learning more about the Grow Biointensive method of sustainable agriculture.
